Fresh 48 Photography FAQ

 Why book a fresh 48?

In hospital newborn photography is not a new thing. My mum has photos of me from the time she was in hospital after the birth of me. I love it! I see such a youthful (yet tired) glow in my mother and realise that these are probably some of the most precious photos of the two of others. The photos were taken at the hospital I was born at. St John of God, Berwick, the same hospital I birthed all three of my children at.

The connection between my past and my present is so vividly told through the photographs we have of our stay in hospital with our babies in our arms.

What is a Fresh 48?

A Fresh 48 is a photography session taken within the first 48 hours of your child’s life. This usually occurs in hospital (or at home if you have had a home birth). As newborns are generally very sleepy in the first few days they often sleep through the session and can handle all the cuddles without getting upset (let’s be honest they actually prefer it).

What to expect?

I arrive at a pre planned time and capture your fresh new baby and all their curled up goodness. The images showcase your baby and the details fresh from the womb before they stretch out and wake up to the world. Often I will document feeding, them meeting siblings or extended family for the first time and lots of kisses and cuddles.

The sessions are often short and sweet and over and done with in less than an hour. This means that you can go back to the purpose of staying in hospital, to rest and recover.

What to wear?

Newborn babies have the best accessories, their rolls, toes, fists, button noses. Dressing your newborn baby in an outfit is gorgeous but not necessary. As many things in life, keep it simple. A plain neutral onesie or single does the job and you can always snazz it up with a wrap/toys/accessory.

As for the family, yes you will be in photos because your baby does not exist without you. I know you are tired and feeling less than your best self but you just had a baby. Embrace that and the gloriousness of it all. The transformation you are going through is huge but when your child sees photos from their first days earthside they want to know what you looked like when you were (re)born as a mother. And trust me, you look beautiful.

But back to clothing. Whatever makes you feel comfortable. I would suggest considering what you would like to do with the photos? If you plan on putting them on your wall are you happy to have dark colours in your images or is a softer image something you are after? Black is slimming but it can be full on in photos.

I love the idea now what?

If preserving the details of your littlest love and the newborn bubble you are in sounds like something you would love to do please get in touch. Due to the small window I do only book a number of sessions per month and securing a session can mean you can focus on your birth preparation and post partum knowing this is taken care of.
